Are you a bargain hunter? Try Carbonite!

by Lisa Olinda on April 28, 2009

My son recently blogged about “Tech on the cheap and a plea for computer sanity...” on his blog Pearls of Wisdom.  In this blog he refers to my hunter mentality when it comes to finding a good deal.  I loath spending money on products that either don’t work or don’t fulfill my expectations.

I have purchased several external hard drives and have used them for backing up my desktop computer.  I have limited success in keeping a continual backup going of my computer system as the external hard drives seem to fail on a regular basis.  My latest 1 TB external drive had started failing and I really did not want to replace it.  I had heard several times about Carbonite but had not really followed up on it because I did not want to spend MORE #008000;">money on technology.

Well my timing worked out perfectly because I was able to get a year with the company for $35.   I get unlimited space (I used about 60 GB currently) and the files are securely stored on their server and can be accessed from any computer.  I like the idea that my files are safe off-site and that it runs in the background constantly.

Now I plan on continuing my manual backups and will backup to my external hard drive which I have now repaired.  I always, always, always recommend that you keep multiple types of backup of your data.  You can never be too careful!

  • In addition to my backup I use Windows Live Sync which is similar to the LiveMesh. "With Live Mesh, you can synchronize files with all of your devices, so you always have the latest versions handy. Access your files from any device or from the web, easily share them with others, and get notified whenever someone changes a file." Thanks for your input Terrance!

I'm paranoid about backing up. I back up, real time, to my laptop, and then to dvd and external hard drive.
I also make use of Microsoft's LiveMesh - for free
